How do our high school courses work?

Our French courses for high school students are designed to support teenagers in developing their French language skills, whether they are learning French at school or only with us at the Alliance Française.

Structured to correspond with the Australian Curriculum as well as the Common European Frame of Reference, they allow students to build their skills in French and eventually prepare for VCE/IB exams (and/or the DELF proficiency examinations).

Our students develop their skills in the four core language areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Our teaching methodology uses a structured and levelled curriculum based on a textbook. Students evolve from understanding new words and sentences in French through a variety of media, to producing them in different contexts through structured role plays and educational games. As they become increasingly confident French speakers, students will also explore francophone cultures and peoples. With an emphasis on authentic communication in class, this task-based approach also helps students develop an understanding of the grammar and spelling of French through interacting in the language. Ultimately, our goal is not only to teach students language skills, but to have them interpret the world from a different perspective.

Based on year level groups (Year 7 to Year 12), our courses are designed to be taken over a full school year so that students can progress to the next step the following year. To ensure progression and efficient learning, it is recommended that students enrol every term for the full length of the school year, for a full completion of the program.

Year 11 and Year 12 courses specifically focus on elements covered in the VCE French curriculum and preparing students for the VCE French examinations.
