Fifty-something restaurateur Walter (Gérard Lanvin) is obsessed with the truth; he has a pathological aversion to lying. He will not permit an untruth to pass his lips, and applies this rigorous moral standard to all those around him.
Unfortunately for Walter, his daughter Clémence (Ana Girardot), and two best friends, novelist Paul (Jean-Hugues Anglade) and bookstore owner Jacques (Wladimir Yordanof), are not being as truthful as they could be. As Walter prepares his latest restaurant for its opening night, desperate for his first Michelin star, the dishonesty of those closest to him shields him from the drama unfolding in their lives. Jacques, whose bookshop hosts the friends’ weekly catch-up lunches, is preparing to run for mayoral office, hoping to avoid being outed as a lifelong homosexual, while Paul is in the throes of a passionate affair with the 20-year-old Clémence.
Originally a beguiling stage play about truth and friendship, True Friends has been cleverly adapted by first-time filmmakers Stéphan Archinard and FrançoisPrévot-Leygonie with a top shelf cast at their very best.
